At Spill, we are committed to building a company that includes people from a variety of different backgrounds. We're particularly interested in hearing from people from typically underrepresented groups in the tech industry.

We're a remote-first tech startup (with an office in London) working to make therapy a universal employee benefit. We're funded by Passion Capital, Ada Ventures and Seedcamp: the best in the game.

We make a Slack and Microsoft Teams integration that companies buy to allow their employees to access wellbeing tools and content (if they’re feeling okay), ask questions to therapists over message (if they’re feeling a bit ‘meh’), and book therapy or manager training sessions in just three clicks (if they need more support).

How's it been going so far? Since launching our product in January 2020, we've grown from 5 to 60+ therapists. We've built a clinical service that delivers over 1,500 therapy sessions each month, but we're growing fast. We want to maintain clinical excellence and drum-tight systems of clinical governance while we grow. That's where you come in.

The role and the work

💡 Essentially, the role is about managing Spill's clinical team, comprising 60+ therapists delivering 1,500 therapy sessions each month, to a team of 600 delivering 15,000 sessions. You will be responsible for maintaining a great culture in our therapy organisation as we scale, helping the clinical director implement and improve systems of clinical governance and responding to everyday issues from supervisors and therapists relating to risk.

Initially, you'll have two clinical supervisors (who supervise the 60+ therapists) and two clinical services associates reporting to you, but a large part of this role will be about growing the clinical team. You will report to the clinical director.

You will also have close working relationships with and be facilitated by the product team, whose job is to optimise and improve the Spill product and services (therapy sessions, ask a therapist, training).

Your responsibilities will include:

  • Leading and mentoring the clinical team: you'll be the clinical lead in the UK in charge of managing a team of supervisors and clinical support staff. You'll be working with them to deliver a high standard of clinical service. You will be involved in the oversight of the hiring of therapists at Spill.
  • Manage risk as we scale: you will be responsible for managing and improving risk management practices, and communicating these to the therapists you manage.
  • Maintain clinical excellence as we scale: you are responsible for ensuring that our therapists are delivering an excellent service to clients and that we have the policies, procedures and processes to scale this to tens of thousands of sessions delivered each month. This will involve rewarding good performance and improving suboptimal performance.
  • Maintain a great culture as we scale: you're responsible for the happiness and development of Spill counsellors and Spill clinical supervisors.
  • Direct clinical input: At Spill we want employees in the clinical arm to feel part of a team and be as familiar with the clinical interventions as possible. The role will therefore involve clinical input in a supervisory capacity and provision of some therapy in a way that fits with your other responsibilities.
  • Clinical input into feature development: With the Clinical Director you will help the Head of Product to keep clinical excellence and clinical judgement at the core of the Spill product; you will be responsible for working out what the therapy touch points look like within the Spill product. So far Spill has pioneered unconventional features such as Ask a Therapist and One-Off Sessions: you will help shape the pioneering features to come.

The ideal candidate

Work experience

  • You are a senior clinical/ counselling psychologist (Band 8a/ 8b or equivalent)
  • You have 2+ years experience managing and supervising other qualified staff
  • You have 2+ years of experience working with clients who present psychiatric risk and of managing this risk and that of the clients with whom your supervisees work
  • You are passionate about and have experience in quality improvement on a service level
  • You have audited and improved clinical systems
  • You are an experienced, compassionate and psychologically flexible clinician who is looking to increase the balance of the work towards the operational.

Traits and attitude

Scientific mindset. You should want to back up your opinions with data and argue your point with logic and evidence. You should want to do things better than how they are done currently. This means that you look to improve current systems and processes and are able to approach problems from first principles.

Excellent people & stakeholder manager. You should be able to coach and support your clinical team, to ensure an excellent service for Spill’s clients. You should also be represent the views of your team to other stakeholders at Spill and to be able to communicate clearly policies and directives to your team.

Impeccable work ethic. As a senior member of the clinical team, you will advocate for what Spill needs to do to deliver the best possible care and see that the work is carried through. You will support the clinical director, the people you manage and Spill’s clients to the best of your ability.

Not a good fit for you if...

You’re looking for a primarily clinical or psychotherapeutic role

The pay and the benefits

TL;DR Full-time preferred (or 4+ days pw) Location: In our London office and remote +/- 3 hours from UK timezone Salary: £60-70K depending on experience +stock options in Spill Reporting to: Sam, Clinical Director

We obviously have all the statutory benefits: a minimum of 30 days' holiday (excluding bank holidays), pension, and sick leave. It should go without saying that you can take the day off or speak with a therapist if you're feeling under the weather (given your position, this may not be a therapist at Spill, but it will be paid for by Spill). For more on how we work at Spill and what to expect, take a look at our careers page.

Our office is in East London but we're a remote-first company (all company-wide and team meetings are default remote), so we accept remote applications. You just need to be in a UK-friendly timezone, i.e. GMT + / - 3 hours.
