Trainee Psychologist / Psychology Support Worker

Make Harry Smile!

Using Harry’s surroundings and passion to help his language ….

Harry is a young autistic man aged 30, he has limited communication and needs interaction and a plan to improve his speech and understanding of the world around him. He has developed but not within the ‘normal’ ranges so this has left him locked inside his head in many situations. Harry is not aggressive and is calm, happy and keen to understand.

Harry loves cooking, dancing, singing and so much more. Harry can cook well and it's a good place to expand his world. He enjoys vegetable gardening and ironing.  He can do washing, cleaning, and cut the grass. He needs support to improve his techniques and help him fill his day with ‘busyness and purpose’.

Patience and communication is key.  Reward good behaviour with positive praise, never be angry and stay calm. If he’s not understanding be patient and try another technique.

Harry’s abilities can vary greatly and what he needs is:

  • An expressive, patient and calm person to work with him and encourage speech through fun and daily activities that are in and around his home .
  • Someone with patience. Experience with autism or special needs is not essential but preferable.
  • Someone who is passionate about cooking, has a love of life and of dance and similar activities, and a love of the world, will inspire Harry.  Your passions will drive him.
  • Someone who is able to think outside of the box.
  • Someone who has heaps of patience and will develop a love of seeing Harry grow in every way. Your motivation must be driven by seeing him develop.

Harry has so much to give and so much to unlock.  He has plenty of time to rest in the evening like most young adults, so communication and activities are essential during the day.

Harry does have an established timetable and volunteers in a morning role which includes some cleaning, hoovering and odd jobs.  The person who takes this role needs to support him through this work for long term enjoyment.

We can use video feedback as a coaching and a learning tool.
