We are now looking for four individuals from engineering backgrounds with Human Factors expertise to retrain as Specialist Inspectors and join our Chemicals, Explosives and Microbiological Hazards Division (CEMHD) on a full-time or part-time, permanent basis, working a minimum of 30 hours per week.

In this key role, you will use your technical knowledge and practical experience to influence not only individual employers but entire industry sectors, making a real difference in keeping people safe at work.
You’ll be supported through a Specialist Training Programme (STP) to gain the skills and expertise to become a safety inspector. You will enrol on the STP and undertake a combination of study, practical experience and a final assessment ensuring you are equipped to operate at the forefront of your specialist area.

The Role
As a Specialist Inspector, after completing our Specialist Training Programme, you will help ensure that employers across the UK are working safely by inspecting, investigating, and assessing organisations within the legislative framework.
You’ll work alongside other technical specialists to ensure the safe operation of workplaces, with activities ranging from inspecting chemical processing plants to providing technical assistance in complex investigations.
Please note, enrolment in the Specialist Training Programme (STP) is a legal requirement that you will be required to study for and successfully complete.
Additionally, you will:
- Identify risks and underlying issues on site
- Assess the adequacy of safety reports for upper tier COMAH (Control Of Major Accident Hazards) sites
- Seek out accident and incident root causes and identify recommendations
- Act as an expert witness
About You
To be considered as a Specialist Inspector, you will need:
- Experience of undertaking HF projects in the workplace
- Experience of applying the principles of HF to engineering design projects
- A degree in Ergonomics or Human Factors OR a degree in engineering or psychology with a post-graduate qualification relevant to the post
- Registered Membership of the Chartered Institute of Ergonomics and Human Factors (CIEHF) or the British Psychological Society (BPS) (or the academic and professional qualifications to apply for and achieve Chartered status)
- A full, valid driving licence
