Job Description

8a Clinical/Counselling Psychologist – 0.8wte (4 days per week) for 12 months

Newham Acute Psychology Service

We are very excited to advertise a 0.8 wte Clinical/Counselling Psychologist 8a post within the inpatient services at Newham Centre for Mental Health. This post is a fixed term post for 12 months. The team consists of qualified psychologists, trainees and assistants working across seven inpatient adult mental health wards. We are looking for enthusiastic and innovative individuals who are keen to bring psychological approaches to service users, carers and MDTs within this inpatient setting.

The post holder would be primarily responsible for providing input to our two triage wards through individual and group therapy sessions, staff consultation, reflective practice, supervision and teaching.  These wards also provide acute beds for extra contractual referrals (ECR). There are a broad range of leadership opportunities within the role including leadership of Quality Improvement projects, staff development initiatives, trauma-informed care training and supervision, and forging links between the acute service, the community mental health services and the wider local community.

We encourage applications from qualified psychologists with the relevant experience, currently working at a Band 7.  Previous experience working in acute settings or a considered appreciation of the role of psychology in this setting is highly desirable.

In recognition of continuing professional development, the post holder will be encouraged to explore clinical and research CPD activity amounting to one session (half a day) per week. This will be determined by the interests of the post holder but could involve working with the local specialist psychotherapy service offering individual and group interventions within CBT, integrative, psychodynamic and systemic modalities.

Research opportunities will be encouraged through our close links with the Unit for Social and Community Psychiatry (Queen Mary University of London), which is based on-site. The Unit is a globally-renowned centre for social psychiatry research which supports small and large-scale projects, including multi-centre randomised controlled trials. The Unit has drawn more than £20m in research funding since 2009, winning grants from bodies including the National Institute for Health Research (NIHR) and the European Commission. In December 2020, the Unit was re-designated as the World Health Organisation’s Collaborating Centre for Mental Health Services Development the only centre in the world to hold this distinction since 2012.

The diverse population of service users accessing the hospital provides opportunities for creativity and innovation in service development. The acute psychology service aims to provide a high quality, equitable and culturally competent service to people with acute and highly complex needs. We look forward to welcoming the successful candidate; their ideas, passions and aspirations into our team.
