SENIOR GRADE: Limerick Prison (WTE) / Portlaoise Prison (WTE)

STAFF GRADE: Various locations across the IPS estate

An area of work where your input, commitment and vision can make a real difference to people in custody, the Criminal Justice System and the community.

The Irish Prison Service (IPS) is responsible for the provision of safe and secure custody, dignity of care and rehabilitation to people in custody for safer communities.  It operates as an executive agency of the Department of Justice and Equality.  Currently, the IPS estate is made up of 12 prisons (10 closed prisons and 2 open centres).  IPS Headquarters is based in Longford.  Typically, the IPS manages 3,500 – 4,000 people in custody at any one time, both male and female, aged 18 years and over.  It employs 3,200 uniformed and civilian staff.

IPS Psychology Service staff work as part of a broad multi-disciplinary team (MDT) within all prisons across the country.  The prison population is a community of 3,500 - 4,000 people.  Referrals to the Psychology Service include a broad range of primary, secondary and tertiary care psychological needs, including (but not exclusive to): mental health difficulties/disorders, personality difficulties, addiction, developmental disorders, neuropsychological difficulties, and family and relationship issues.

Prison based Psychologists have regular contact with community agencies involved in the support and resettlement of people leaving custody.  They also work with the families and carers of those in custody.  Where clinically appropriate, IPS Psychologists may provide time-limited community intervention(s) to support a client’s transition from custody to community.

The Service plays a critical role in supporting the broader IPS organisation (and Criminal Justice Agency partners, as required) through consultation, training and education.  Placements are available for trainee psychologists and the Service provides regular input to University Doctoral and Masters Programmes.  Psychologists are also involved in research in conjunction with various Universities. The IPS Psychology Service is committed to providing excellent Continuing Professional Development opportunities for all staff members.

The IPS Psychology Service is currently made up of the Head of Psychological Services, supported by a Principal Psychologist, Senior Psychologists, Staff Grade Psychologists and Assistant Psychologists.  The IPS Psychology Service Headquarters is based at Arbour Hill Prison, Dublin 7.

Deadline for applications is 3pm, Monday 6th January 2020.  For details of essential requirements and how to apply log on to: https://www.irishprisons.ie/information-centre/recruitment/
