Veteran’s Complex Treatment Service

Band: SM1 (NHS 8a) / Expert

Salary: £40,000 - £48,000 plus travel allowance

Hours: Full time or Part-time (22.5 hours minimum)

St Andrew’s Healthcare is one of five National providers of the Complex Treatment Service for Veterans. Our team is growing and we have an exciting opportunity for someone who has a passion for helping Veterans cope with the effects of living with complex trauma and/or mental health needs. If you are a proactive Clinical Psychologist who is skilled in working with complex trauma and would welcome the opportunity to be part of a team of dynamic, passionate and highly skilled team, we want to hear from you.

St Andrew’s Consultancy Service and our Veterans Complex Treatment Service

St Andrew’s is a charity commissioned by the NHS to provide specialist mental healthcare for people with some of the most complex and challenging mental health needs in the UK.  The Consultancy Service specialises in taking our clinical expertise into community outpatient settings.  We therefore offer a variety of services both in Northampton and in London and surrounding areas.

In April 2018 we were commissioned by NHS England to provide a specialist Complex Treatment Service (CTS)  for Military Veterans across the East Midlands and East of England.   Veterans are referred by colleagues in the Transition, Intervention and Liaison Service (TILS) teams in Essex and Lincoln for military related trauma and/or mental health needs with the expectation that they will be seen as close to their homes as possible.  The demand for the service, as well as the vast geography we cover, means we specifically need to develop a clinical base in the Lincoln and Bury St Edmunds areas.  Therefore the ideal candidates will live within easy commuting distance from either Lincoln or Bury St Edmunds.

The Role

The successful applicant will join highly motivated and friendly team and will report directly to the Clinical Lead.

You will be responsible for delivering outcome based psychological therapy for a minimum of 22 sessions that is uniquely tailored to meet the needs of Veterans living in the Lincoln or Bury St Edmunds area.  You will also be required to travel within an hour to hour and a half of each base to see clients further afield.   Therefore, a full, clean driver’s license is essential.

Given the nature of the client group and the geographical needs of the service, we are looking for a clinical psychologist with significant experience in treating complex mental health needs in an autonomous capacity.  Whilst previous experience in working with Veterans would be an advantage, full training will be provided to clinical psychologists who have relevant clinical experience and who have a genuine interest in developing skills to help Veterans transition successfully into civilian life after service.  However, being able to demonstrate a minimum of two years’ experience in treating complex trauma according to evidenced based guidelines using EMDR and tCBT is essential. Equally important would be your ability to work both autonomously within community based settings (such as private practice or assertive out-reach teams) as well as collaboratively with other teams and professionals that has drawn on your ability to “think outside the box” to find creative and flexible solutions to engage service users into psychological treatment.

You will be able to work independently as well as closely and collaboratively with a multidisciplinary team thriving in a team environment given you will be working in close collaboration with our wider Complex Treatment team and partner Treatment Intervention and Liaison Services (TILS) located in Lincoln and Colchester as well as other Charities and Organizations that form part of the Veteran’s Network.  You will have experience of joint working given you will be working with our Clinical Liaison Nurses to assess and support each Veteran on your case load.

In summary, this role will suit a person already located in Lincoln or Bury St Edmunds who has a genuine interest in working with Veteran’s and clinical experience to match.  You will have an established track record of successfully treating patients with complex mental health presentations and an established ethos of using outcome data and service user feedback to dynamically inform treatment.  You will be eager to take ownership and responsibility for delivering your work and will be self-driven, results-oriented and be able to demonstrate excellent time management and organizational skills.

Within the role, you will be encouraged to develop your strengths and skills through a robust structure of clinical supervision and opportunities for professional development.   St Andrews has an excellent record of providing opportunities for research, training and continuing professional development so you will also have access to peer support from the wider Charity, as well as regular CPD events.  Due to the pioneering nature of this service, there will be opportunities for service development including co-production with service users and an interest and enthusiasm in these areas is desired.

You will also be supported to develop your role within our service according to your specific strengths and areas of professional interest.

In order to be eligible for the role, the successful applicant will be registered with the HCPC and BPS.

We offer an excellent benefits package including pension, 38 days holiday, sickness policy on par with NHS, life cover, car lease scheme, cycle to work scheme and childcare vouchers and opportunities for research, teaching and continuing professional development.
