Enjoying unique lifestyle opportunities, St Helena Island is a self-governing overseas territory of the United Kingdom. Although better placed to develop economically and socially as a result of opening our international airport in 2017, we are not at the stage of self-sufficiency and therefore remain dependent on UK government aid. There are four schools on the island; one secondary and three primaries. The curriculum broadly models the English education system.
The island’s relatively new Inclusion Service, through multi-agency support, works with all children with SEND and/or with SEMH needs, with the limited professional expertise available. You will build upon recently established systems, pathways and approaches across inclusion and mental health services.
In this key role you will provide assessments, therapeutic interventions, psychological perspectives and advice regarding complex psychological issues and presentations. You must contribute to and strengthen the existing policies, practices and pathways, focused on enhancing social inclusion, social and emotional wellbeing and attainment of all children and young people. Your skills will be vital in detection and diagnosis of neurodevelopmental vulnerabilities and implementing evidence-based interventions.
Holding a university qualification to at least level 6 in educational psychology plus registration as an educational psychologist with a relevant national body, you have practiced across a range of education, health and community settings. You have a background in using psychological consultation as the preferred model of service delivery and use of an evidence and/or research based, hypothesis-testing approach to psychological intervention. You have worked with children with social, emotional and mental health needs and have experience in developing school based approaches to meet these needs; in particular, an understanding of attachment difficulties and executive functioning difficulties and how to support these at individual, group and whole school levels.
In addition, you must demonstrate our core values of fairness, integrity and teamwork and use your diverse expertise and experiences to ensure your time on the Island has the broadest benefit to St Helena. As an officer funded through the Technical Co-Operation Programme you will be expected to share your knowledge and skills beyond the workplace contributing to workforce, community and capacity development in St Helena.

Salary: £35k-£40k, depending on experience and qualifications

Annual Pension Contribution of 7.5% of salary
