The post holder works under the direction of the Programmed Director to provide a range of professional psychological assessment and treatment services to inmates in accordance with the relevant legislation, Department policies and procedures and professional standards, designed to address inmates’ needs and designed to effect positive changes in their behavior so that they are not likely to reoffend.

The Psychologist coordinates and supervises additional contracted clinical services as determined by the Programme Director or Commissioner. The Psychologist also provides training and limited professional support to the Staff of the Correctional Facilities and undertakes administrative and professional duties including screening and assessment for prospective new hires.  

Applicants must possess a Doctoral Degree (PhD) or equivalent in Forensic or Clinical Psychology or relevant field of study and must be able to meet the criteria for registration with the Bermuda Psychologists Association (under the Psychological Practitioners Registration, 2003).  A minimum of five years post-qualification experience working in a correctional setting, with a special emphasis on sexual, violent and low function offenders is required. 

Applicants who do not possess a doctoral degree may also be considered for the post if they possess the following:

  • A Master’s degree in Clinical or Forensic Psychology, with at least six years post qualification work experience directly with offender populations in correctional or community-based settings.
  • A chartered Psychologist with a Master’s degree (as accredited by the British Psychological Society) with at least five years’ post qualification experience.

Clinical Psychologists will be required to provide verifiable evidence of sufficient forensic training and /or practice experience.
