Head of Psychological Services for people affected by physical health problems

Band 9 

Full-time 37.5 Hours per week

Buckinghamshire Healthcare NHS Trust is seeking to appoint a Practitioner Psychologist to provide dynamic and creative leadership as the Head of Psychological Services.

This post has arisen as part of the legacy of Professor Paul Kennedy who sadly passed away in September 2016. This recently expanded role and full time post is part of the Trust’s strategic plan to become the safest healthcare system in the country.

This long established and thriving applied psychology service for people affected by physical health problems currently has twenty two staff (13.5 WTE). The role of Trust Head of Psychological Services will be pivotal in ensuring the highest standards of evidenced based practice, service delivery and psychological care for people affected by physical health problems. These currently include cancer care and haematology, spinal cord injury, diabetes, renal, neurology, stroke, head injury, burns, chronic fatigue, chronic pain, cardiac, musculoskeletal, medically unexplained symptoms and respiratory conditions. The post holder will provide professional accountability, strategic planning, leadership and clinical governance of psychological services in this applied psychology service across the acute and community settings of Buckinghamshire Healthcare NHS Trust.

The successful post holder will lead income generation, innovative service development and support service delivery within all tiers of psychological services for people with physical health problems. The postholder will have the support of the lead Consultant Psychologists in meeting the varying needs across the service settings in Buckinghamshire Healthcare NHS Trust. The postholder will also hold an individual caseload in their specialty and sessional time for research.

The successful candidate will have significant experience of working at a senior level and leading services in this field. Evidence of line management experience is expected together with demonstrable involvement in service innovation, income generation, steering change and developing effective, collaborative relationships with colleagues including managers and service planners. Holding a management/leadership qualification will also be an advantage as will training in supervision.
