Multi Systemic Therapy
MST is a well-researched community based family intervention directed at young people, involved in criminal activity or anti-social behaviour who are on the edge of care or custody. MST aims to reduce anti-social behaviour and out of home placements. The MST team in Cambridgeshire has developed a well-established service, having been operational since 2001. It incorporates CM (Contingency Management) as a treatment for serious adolescent alcohol and substance misuse. The post holder will be supported clinically and managerially by the MST Clinical Director, who is a consultant clinical psychologist and family therapist. The MST team has national links with the other MST teams in England and joins up with the Northamptonshire teams for quarterly training. MST is widely recognised and a NICE recommended evidence-based programme, delivering significantly enhanced outcomes for children and families.
You will make assessments and lead the MST Workers in devising action-focussed interventions to create positive changes for families with the aim of reducing offending and out of home placements. You will be delivering pragmatic systemic work with families and cognitive behavioral interventions as well as working with the complex professional and community networks often surrounding these families with multiple problems. You will actively manage risks with your team and be ready to take responsibility for clinical outcomes within clear lines of accountability. You will have a high degree of flexibility in your working week, as there is a requirement for out of hour’s on-call for the Workers with this post. The MST team consists of the MST Supervisor and 4 MST Workers. The team has a business support. Alongside the MST Supervisor role, you will occasionally act as backup Supervisor for the MST-PSB (Problem Sexual Behaviour) team.
Family Psychology Mutual and partnerships
The 2 MST teams are spinning out from the Local Authority to become a non-profit mutual with all staff being shareholders, having been awarded an initial 3-year contract. The post holder will be employed by Family Psychology Mutual. Access to the NHS pension scheme is being negotiated. This is an exciting time of development with new opportunities for the company to expand to other Evidence Based Practices. The team will be well embedded in the Cambridgeshire with strong local partnership relationships in place between Health, Social Care and Youth Offending. There will be a local steering group with relevant stakeholders, supporting the work of the MST team and some contractual meetings with commissioners. You will work very closely with the UK MST Network who have allocated an expert to the team to support the quality assurance and work towards achieving high adherence to the treatment model. The team will be based in a newly acquired office building in Huntingdon.
You will need to be a qualified clinical or applied psychologist or family therapist with experience working systemically or have worked within the child and adolescent field with appropriate registration. Your continuing professional development will be supported throughout and with immediate initial training in MST.
