About our Principal Scientist (Human Factors) role:

The Principal Scientist is responsible for shaping work in the Psychology and Social Science areas to be in line with current, identified, areas of work, as well as developing their own. This includes various aspects of occupational and environmental health, wellbeing and human behaviour, with experience in ergonomics (especially musculoskeletal disorders) being desirable. As a key strategic leader within the Research Group, you will also provide a strategic and operational vision for the business. You will lead the development and delivery of research proposals, project delivery and the exploration of consultancy science into practice.

Responsibilities as our Principal Scientist (Human Factors):

  • Effectively lead and manage a number of research projects, small and large, whilst delivering on time and budget
  • Collaborate with other research teams in a variety of studies relating to wider occupational and environmental health and safety concerns
  • Manage, involve and mentor staff within projects, including in the writing of research proposals and reports
  • Take the initiative to lead and tackle complex problems within their own area of research, as well as at Group level, ensuring a favourable outcome
  • Lead the organisation’s research development activities in a relevant area of expertise, including developing ideas, leading strategic meetings and meeting with clients
  • Regularly prepare high quality research proposals for relevant projects, with a track record of success in winning new research(in the past 3 years)
  • Actively participate in research strategy meetings within the Senior Team and organisation as a whole, with a track record of successful ideas
  • Actively participate in high-level consultancy work to help solve complex problems
  • Regularly present and attend scientific conferences/networking events ultimately showcasing the organisations brand credentials as well as continuously developing, and expanding, scientific expertise

What we’re looking for in our Principal Scientist (Human Factors):

  • PhD or other higher degree in Psychology/Social Sciences, and at least 10 years’ experience in a senior role
  • Chartered or registered with an appropriate professional body
  • Ergonomics experience (desirable)
  • Recent and extensive, experience of working in a research environment is essential, and consultancy and/or training experience is desirable
  • Experience in qualitative and quantitative methods within relevant areas of expertise
  • Track record of scientific publications and conference presentations
  • Strong leadership, prioritisation, communication, planning and organisational skills
  • Excellent influencing and customer relationship management skills
  • Ability to relate well to all kinds of people, build appropriate rapport, and constructive and effective relationships
  • Team player, easily gaining trust and support of colleagues
  • Works well under pressure and making well-judged decisions on complex issues
  • Excellent IT skills
  • Willingness and flexibility to travel as required
