Job Description

An exciting opportunity has arisen for a research clinical psychologist to join our treatment design team. Oxford VR is a ground-breaking University of Oxford spin-out company founded by Professor Daniel Freeman in January 2017 to develop virtual reality treatments for mental health problems. The company has received substantial financial support from investors including Oxford Science Innovation, University of Oxford, Force Over Mass, RT Capital and GT Healthcare Capital Partners.

Oxford VR’s first product, an automated VR treatment for height phobia, was tested last year in a large randomised controlled trial, with the results gaining global acclaim when published in the Lancet Psychiatry. The treatment is now being used in selected NHS clinics.Oxford VR is also part of the consortium, led by Professor Freeman, which won the UK National Institute of Health Research (NIHR) i4i Mental Health 2017 Challenge, a £4 million award to develop VR-based psychological therapy to benefit NHS patients with psychosis. Treatments are currently in development for a number of other psychological conditions.

As a member of Oxford VR’s treatment design team, the post-holder will have a central role in the development of the immersive treatments. This is an opportunity to be at the forefront of developing evidence-based technological solutions for better mental health.

There is potential for a fractional (0.2 FTE) position in Professor Daniel Freeman’s Oxford Cognitive Approaches to Psychosis team in the Department of Psychiatry at the University of Oxford. Depending on the successful candidate’s preference, they could contribute to the research of the Dept of Psychiatry and/or undertake clinical work, with potential for an honorary contract at Oxford Health NHS Foundation Trust.

The successful applicant will have strong cognitive therapy knowledge and skills for emotional disorders or other problems, an enthusiasm to provide the best clinical psychology treatments to the general public, and a doctorate in clinical psychology (or equivalent) accredited by the BPS. A competitive salary will be offered, with the potential for options in the company. Oxford VR has offices in central Oxford and in Farringdon in London. If based in Oxford, the post-holder would be expected to make regular visits to the Farringdon office to collaborate with our development team.

We encourage prospective applicants to contact Professor Daniel Freeman (email: for an informal discussion about the post. Applications are by cover letter and CV.
