Status: One Year FTC

Location: Leatherhead, Surrey

Reporting to: Research Practitioner

Primary Function

To support the existing members of the Research team by contributing to, and personally undertaking, research and analysis projects.

Responsibilities and Duties

This is a one-year FTC which is likely to be suitable for a new graduate seeking experience in research into pay, conditions of service, and general human resources issues, as well as operational policing matters. There is an opportunity to learn about and contribute to primary research projects and to conduct secondary research, including undertaking rapid evidence reviews on policing topics.  

Specific duties:

  • Responsible for supporting senior members of the Research team in the administration of research and analysis projects, as well as personally undertaking some small research projects under supervision of senior members of the Research team.
  • Responsible for basic statistical analysis of surveys that are designed by senior members of the Research team. This will require familiarity with SPSS.
  • Responsible for the production of data trends using Home Office supplied data, and presentation of these in a variety of “dashboards” (under direction of senior members of the Research team).
  • Responsible for the conduct of literature reviews on matters relating to pay, professional development, and other mainly Human Resource matters. Literature reviews may also be required on equality issues, operational policing, disciplinary procedures, and other policing topics. 

Person Specification

It is essential that the post holder will:

  • Be qualified to at least degree level: likely in the social sciences
  • Be able to use MS Word and Excel
  • Be familiar with SPSS, and basic statistical analysis including frequencies, and simple tests of difference and correlation

  • Demonstrate attention to detail
  • Demonstrate the ability to analyse and critically appraise
  • Ensure accuracy in their work at all times
  • Be able to work independently and as part of a team

Demonstrate sound judgement in decision-making, within the boundaries of their role, and be aware of the limits of his or her own authority
