The Anna Freud National Centre for Children and Families supports distressed children and their families through innovative therapeutic practice and research, training and promoting awareness of mental health issues. In April 2019, the Centre opened its new Centre of Excellence located in King’s Cross.

The Centre values diversity and aims to have a workforce that reflects this. We encourage applications from all sections of the community and would actively seek to increase the diversity of the Brent Wellbeing and Emotional Support Team, which currently has professionals from a range of backgrounds. We are seeking to recruit from both diverse cultural and socio-economic backgrounds to reflect the nature of the population we work within Brent.

Brent – Wellbeing and Emotional Support Team

The Brent Wellbeing and Emotional Support Team (WEST) is a commissioned service by Brent Council focusing on improving the well-being of children and young people aged 4 to 18 years (or up to 25 years with a Special Educational Need or Disability) in identified vulnerable groups. These vulnerable groups include children and young people with social, emotional and mental health needs, those at risk of exclusion from school or alternative provision, children and young people with learning disabilities, looked after children and those who are at risk of multiple vulnerabilities including child sexual exploitation, gang affiliation and domestic violence.

The service offers short-medium term evidence based individual and group interventions to address mild to moderate wellbeing needs largely using CBT, trauma informed and Mentalization approaches in the context of an Adaptive Mentalization-Based Integrative Treatment (AMBIT) model to inform practice overall. The work takes place on an outreach basis across a variety of settings, including schools, family homes and other community venues as well as work being conducted virtually.

We are currently recruiting a Clinical Psychologist, Counselling Psychologist or Family Therapist to join our team. The successful candidate will work closely with Social Care and Virtual School colleagues in addressing the mental health needs of looked after children and those on the edge of care on an individual basis and through group programmes including groups for foster carers. As well as individual supervision, there will be access to peer supervision groups.

The post-holder will have experience in working therapeutically in outreach settings and a good knowledge of current models and practice in the area of child and family mental health.

The work will be a mixture of face-to-face work in community settings (predominantly schools) and home-based virtual appointments. Some attendance at meetings and supervisions may be required at the Brent Civic Centre, Engineers Way, Wembley HA9 0FJ

and the Anna Freud Centre, 4-8 Rodney Street, London N1 9JH.
