Senior Psychologist Grade I in the Irish Prison Service
Portlaoise Prison and the National Violent and Disruptive Prisoner Unit
The Irish Prison Service (IPS) intends to appoint Senior Psychologists, Grade I. The individuals appointed will report directly to the Head of Psychology Service and will provide supervision, support and line management to Psychologists Grade II.
The IPS Psychology Service forms part of the Care and Rehabilitation Directorate within the IPS, which also includes e.g. Healthcare, Psychiatry, Addiction Services, Education, Work and Training, Employment, Chaplaincy and Resettlement Services. Psychologists work as part of multi-disciplinary teams within the 14 penal establishments across the country. The prison population is a community within our broader community, and therefore the IPS Psychology Service provides a range of primary, secondary and tertiary care psychological services in adherence with the principle of equivalence of care. Psychologists appointed to posts in the Irish Prison Service will have an opportunity to work with clients who are experiencing a wide range of emotional, mental health and other offence related difficulties.
Candidates must on or before the closing date,
(a) Be eligible for graduate membership of the Psychological Society of Ireland (PSI) or the British Psychological Society (BPS).
(b) (i) Hold a postgraduate professional qualification in Clinical Psychology recognised by PSI. (Applicants with qualifications obtained outside of Ireland must obtain a statement of equivalence in Clinical Psychology from the Department of Health);
(ii) Hold a postgraduate professional qualification in Counselling Psychology recognised by PSI. (Applicants with qualifications obtained outside of Ireland must obtain a statement of equivalence in Counselling Psychology from the Department of Health);
(iii) Hold a recognised postgraduate qualification in Forensic Psychology and have obtained Chartered Forensic status from the British Psychological Society
(c) Have at least 2 years relevant experience after obtaining the required professional post graduate qualification.
2. Demonstrate that they possess the skills and competencies identified as being important for the role. These include:

- Managing and Developing people;
- Interpersonal/communication skills;
- Specialist Knowledge, Expertise and Self Development.
